If your privacy online is important to you, the article is for you. If you spend any amount of time online,
then you know that your privacy online is not assured. And especially if you use the internet for transactions
where you put a lot of personal information out there, then you need to do everything to ensure your privacy online.
Why do you need a Virtual Privacy Network (VPN)?
A virtual private network is a service that protects your internet connection and your privacy online.
No one likes to be watched and tracked even if they have nothing to hide.
Why you need to step up your privacy online game.
1. Encrypting your traffic.
The entire internet travels over the internet – and internet routing protocol (IP Routing) determines
the paths the packets take. So by encrypting the traffic, you are making your work
less visible to the internet operators.
2. Eliminating online tracking.
Online tracking is also known as web beidseidung. It is the process of having a third party gather
information on a website user without their knowledge.
Examples of tracking may include the website sending cookies to the user’s computer,
which identify the computer and browser so that website operators can identify which
pages were visited, when visited and how long ago visited. The internet operators might also be able to
determine IP address to correlate movement and behavior patterns to identify users.
3. Protecting your IP address.
Your internet service provider (ISP) assigns a unique number to each home connection.
When you connect to the internet, the ISP sends an encrypted packet (or packet of data)
to the open internet, which the government can decrypt. That would show which computer you are and
how long ago you connected to the internet. There are many reasons why you need a VPN for your ISP to track.
The most common are: your credit card and banking transactions, your internet usage patterns,
what websites you visit, and your online habits. If the VPN is active, the ISP cannot track you.
4. Accessing websites that require a VPN.
Websites like facebook, yahoo, and google require a VPN for data encryption.
The websites do not want the government knowing what you are doing online.
The websites also want the websites you visit to send them all your encrypted data.
So by using a VPN, you get to connect to the internet via Facebook and Google
without divulging your private data.
It is becoming more important that we encrypt our traffic so that we cannot be tracked.
If you have nothing to hide, then why should you encrypt your data?
You have probably heard of The Tor Project. They offer tools to protect your privacy online.
However, you need to understand the difference between a VPN (Virtually encrypted virtual network)
and a virtual private network (VPN with a direct interface).
VPN stands for virtual private network.
A VPN is a software application which encrypts your data stream.
So in order to connect to the internet, your data has to be encrypted.
On the other hand, a virtual private network is a software application which
connects to the internet through a virtual private network.
Your data is not encrypted. It is sent through your ISP’s public network.
This technology allows you to connect to the internet from anywhere that you have an internet connection.
So it allows you to connect from very remote locations like places where there is no connectivity.
Advantages of using virtual private networks
Virtual private networks are becoming popular these days. There are many advantages to the use of this.
Firstly, it allows you to connect to the internet in a very secure way without using encryption.
Using encryption would mean that you are disclosing your IP address,
which is the internet protocol address of your computer. This may be a violation of terms and conditions
that you agreed when you signed up for the service.
Secondly, virtual private networks allow you to connect with very limited network coverage.
If you have a slow connection, you will not be able to use the internet very well.
However, if you have a fast internet connection, you will be able to browse around
and use your internet connection freely.
The value of online privacy
With the increase in these technologies, it is important that you understand how the technologies work.
The security of the connection will depend on what type of software is running on your computer.
Windows and Mac OS allow for the higher levels of security.
If you are using Windows, you can run the virtual private network in a secure mode, which is called full mode.
In secure mode, your computer will run in a mode that encrypts your data stream,
while in a mode called casual mode, which is also called unsecure mode, your computer will not
be able to encrypt your data stream. You will not be able to use full or casual mode if your computer is using Mac OS.
We will take a closer look at how a virtual private network works to protect your internet
connection and your privacy online in the next article.
