As stated earlier, I find the importance of “knowing that you can change your life” a key to the process of change. It was stated by T. Harv Eker in a commencement address at Tulane University, and I completely agree with his perspective on the most central ingredient to becoming an effective and prosperous leader.

Leaders who know they can change their lives are more effective leaders, and I always view leadership as a process of taking things that were not working, and changing them. To be an effective leader, you must first know you can change your life.

Here is my take on how to know you can change your life:

1. Get clear on what is really going on. 
When you’re working to change your life, what are the things that are not working, and what are the things that are working? Make sure you know what is really going on. If you’re not clear on the things that are not working, then you’re not going to be clear on what is really going on, and you’ll end up wasting time and energy.

2. Get clear on what is working.
If you’re not clear on what’s working, then you’re not going to be clear on what’s working, and you’ll end up wasting time and energy. When you’re working to change your life, you have to be focused on the things that are working, and ensure you’re doing the things that are working, rather than wasting your time on things that are not working.

3. Get clear on what needs to change.
You have to get clear on the things that need to change, rather than the things that need to stay the same. When you’re working to change your life, you have to focus on the things that need to change, and ensure you’re changing the things that are not working.

4. Set goals and take action.
When you’re working to change your life, you have to set realistic goals, take action, and get started on the necessary process of changing your life. You can’t be in a state of inactivity. You have to get busy. You have to get set on the path that leads to your life goal.

5. Visualize and celebrate.
When you’re working to change your life, you have to be creative, energized, and excited about the future. You have to get into the flow, and be proactive about getting things changed. When you work to change your life, you have to use the power of visualization to make sure you’re on the right path. When you celebrate, you have to celebrate your accomplishments. You can’t stay the same. You have to change your actions and get busy.

Does this have anything to do with my job?

By now, you’re probably asking yourself, “Does this have anything to do with my job?” Actually, it has a great deal. Many employees find themselves in a state of constant change, and find themselves in a state of flux because they’re not given clear direction on what they’re supposed to do. If they get clear on their goals and actions, along with the value that it will bring to their life, they have a much better chance of staying put and making progress towards their goals. And so, it’s no wonder many employees feel they’re victims of circumstance and find themselves in a state of limbo. By taking these five steps, your chances of avoiding the state of limbo increase significantly.

If you’d like to discover a path to stay put in your job, learn these 5 steps above.

1. Identify what you want to do in life.
Don’t just think about it, answer the question, “What do you want to do in life?” Don’t just ponder it, answer the question, “What are your goals?” If you don’t know what you want, you won’t know how to get it. Once you know, you have a much better chance of finding your way.

2. Learn how to create your goals.
Your actions will reflect your thoughts. If you don’t take action, you will have no goals to reflect your thoughts on. The more you learn about how to achieve your goals, the more you’ll have to work with. It’s a self-correcting system. The more you learn and the more you take action, the closer you’ll get to achieving your goals. The closer you get to achieving your goals, the less the state of limbo will exist.

3. Set SMART goals.
SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. A goal that requires a lot of work to achieve is going to have a high degree of SMARTER than other goals. To get closer to achieving your goals, always try to set SMART goals. Never set SMART goals that have a high degree of difficulty or a high degree of pain. When you set SMART goals, think about the goals you’re already doing. Are their goals demanding high levels of effort and focus? If so, you probably should reconsider your goals.

For example, if you’re a public speaker and you have a goal of improving your speaking skills to be good enough for a church speaking job, you should probably reconsider your goal. Maybe there are better goals you should be aiming for. Maybe you should try something else. A good rule of thumb is, if you’re not doing your current goal, you probably should reconsider your goal.

When you set SMART goals, they’ll give you a better start and a better chance of achieving them.

Start by asking yourself,
“What are the needs of my workplace and my company?”
“What’s the best way to reach my goals?”
“What are the most important things I can do?”

Then decide what you need to do and do it!

The more you ask yourself these questions and the more you ask yourself them, the more clear you’ll get about the direction you need to take.
