The first time I heard the story of Jesus walking on water was from a friend who taught at a Christian college. We were discussing my time at her Christian college and her saying that it was a good place to go for learning because they had very little contact with society.

I agreed. So when I heard about a Christian college that didn’t have this feature. I was surprised.

To be honest, I was surprised until I heard the story about Jesus walking on water. Then I thought, what a joke. What a joke! I had spent my entire time at that college trying to get those who attended my school to understand the value of our freedom, our God given rights. But what I had learned was that our God given rights were worthless if we didn’t follow the rules.

The rules made us “see” freedom and they were worthless if we didn’t conform to them. But I had learned from my college professors that we couldn’t see God’s laws, we couldn’t see God’s laws, we couldn’t see God’s laws. We were wrong. We were foolish. We were worthless if we didn’t obey the rules.

And the very next morning, after I had spent my time studying and my money paying for tuition, I went to this “Christian college” and taught a class. It was a class on “The Bible”. Class was open to the public and as such, we had people watching us.

The students were there to learn. They came in and they were told, “come learn about the greatest book in the world” or “come learn about God”. For some it was a first time, and for others, it was their first time ever at an institution of higher learning. So we went through a ritual of introducing ourselves and saying our names, and thanking them for coming.

Then we changed. We all stopped talking and we just observed. The students went through the routine of opening their books, having their student ID’s scanned and then they were escorted out of the class to the cafeteria.

This ritual was repeated a few days later.

One morning a young couple walked into the class. They were engrossed in preparing breakfast for the kids who had come in earlier. The young man was engrossed in making ham, sausage and eggs. He was wearing a cap and gown which allowed us to see his tie. The young woman was engrossed in making omelets. They asked if there was any one available they could attend their own class.

The professor answered, “why yes we are available”. He also stated they were not given time to make breakfast so they had to attend class. That was the end of their participation in the class. Later, when the class was dismissed, no one from the class was in. The woman had dropped the omelets and the young man had made the ham.

Not once did any one from the class initiate anything. The first two people to arrive were surrounded by the young couple as they sat down to breakfast. The young couple was asked if they would like to attend the class. The professor answered, “why yes we are available” to which the young couple responded, “we have decided to attend our own class”.

None of the four people in the class ever initiated anything. This lack of initiative was very sad and was reminiscent of the little children who had their own class, so they could play.

If I were a young couple contemplating marriage, I would tell them, “look, a Christian college is available to you. The first time I was invited to a Christian college was at the age of 15. In that age, it was considered impolite to initiate anything. In our modern society, this is unacceptable. No young couple wants to initiate something.

So make a good choice”. In your marriage, always be a man who initiates and attends to personal relationship issues and leave the others to the others.
