The truth is we have all committed our time, talents, emotions, money and property to some claim which we are bound to lose. This is the reason why we are free to choose the course of action we take in our lives. The key to choosing wisely is the ability to change our lives. So once we have decided to write this article, we must now develop the determination to change our life. This is the ONLY way we can expect to see real results.
For most people the process of finding a new life begins with realizing that they have too much invested in a life which is not in demand. Most people go back and forth from job to job, and from income producing activity to another income producing activity.
We have no financial goals, no vision of the future. So we ask ourselves “Where do I want to be in five years? Where do I want to be in ten years?”
We keep saying to ourselves “I want a better job, but I don’t know what that means” or “I want to learn another language, but I don’t know how to do it” or “I want to start a gym, but I don’t know how to structure a business.” Most people spend every waking hour worrying about something else. So they spend a lot of energy being worried instead of being productive.
There are some people who always have a plan. They make plans daily. They spend at least an hour a day thinking about what they want to do in the future. There are other people who will spend ten minutes thinking about something, and then spend an hour planning for the future. This is the vast minority of people who do achieve balance, they achieve it through choice. They have a plan, but their plans are simple.
This brings us to the issue of having a plan. If you do not have a plan, you are just going to keep hitting rock. Just when you think you can’t be more stressed, you will read in the paper about the new terrorist threat that has emerged in Europe, or a tsunami warning, or a storm warning.
A plan is important, but it is not enough to get ahead in life. A plan is important, but it is not enough to prevent disasters. When the world changes, we need a plan to change with it. Our life may change, but our ability to cope changes with us. In the first half of the twentieth century, a man could retire at fifty, go to a hotel, enjoy life, and not worry about money. Now a man can retire at fifty, have a comfortable retirement, have the same amount of money, and worry about money at four hundred years from now. Our ability to cope changes with us. The better we cope, the better we remain.
What would life be like if we had a plan? If we had a plan, we would not need to cope with anything that happened. We would never need to decide whether we would have money or a plan, we would just do both well. And we would be able to have as much success as we want, because we would know how to do both well.
And we would have as much happiness as we want, because we would have the ability to do both well.
So when we have a plan, we have a plan, but we also have a way to cope with all of the issues that life will throw at us. We have all of the time in the world to make adjustments.
Planning is not about not having a plan, but having an effective plan.
It is not about putting together a piece of paper and saying I want to do X, Y, and Z. It is about having a system, a process, and an action plan that enables you to do what you want to do. It is not about being busy, it is about being productive. It is not about trying to get everything done in a day, it is about getting most of it done.
